I am an elfing mom. Yes. I know I annoy some, probably a lot, because I take the time to do silly things with a felt doll. But I have the time and energy for it, and I find it fun. So bring the hate, I still love this silly tradition.
Every one of the made-up children's stories has a creep aspect of it. And if this one particularly creeps out you or your kid... the whole idea of a doll watching you all day... well, I get it because that is how I am with the Easter Bunny. Some feel that way about Santa or the Toothfairy. But that doesn't mean that others find it interesting festive and fun. My kids adore Ryan, our boy elf, and tomorrow they will meet Rosie, his girlfriend, who I got for my daughter. They rush out of their rooms every morning and search the house for the newest location, running to my bed to whisper in my ear where Ryan is posted today. Our elf always brings a note from Santa, reminding them to be good, and sometimes bringing up something specific they need to work on or something special they can do that day to be a nice kid. Our elf doesn't really get into mischief, after all my point of doing this is to help my kids be good, and I find the notes from Santa to work like a charm in keeping them in line.
If my kids did not enjoy this like I do, I wouldn't bother. But they love it. And I love having my behavior helper through the holiday season. I mean I caught my four year old twins wiping the windows the other day just to impress Ryan. I wish I could do this all year.
